Step-by-Step

How to open a Chime account

What you'll need, how long it takes, and how to unlock SpotMe and Credit Builder once you're in.

Opening a Chime Checking and Savings account is a fully online process with no credit check required. Here's the whole flow.

1

Start your application

Sign up through the app or online with your name, address, date of birth, and Social Security number.

2

Get verified

Chime verifies your identity electronically — there's no in-person visit and no hard credit check to open Checking or Savings.

3

Activate your Visa Debit Card

Your physical or digital debit card needs to be activated before certain features, including SpotMe, become available.

4

Set up direct deposit

Add your Chime account and routing number with your employer or payroll provider. A qualifying direct deposit of $200 or more unlocks SpotMe, early direct deposit, and full Credit Builder benefits.

5

Turn on SpotMe (optional)

Once eligible, enroll in SpotMe from Settings in the app for fee-free overdraft coverage on debit purchases and cash withdrawals.

6

Apply for Credit Builder (optional)

Requires an existing Chime Checking Account. No credit check, no annual fee, and no minimum security deposit to apply.

What you'll need on hand

How fast is it?

Most applicants can complete sign-up in a few minutes. Access to SpotMe and full Credit Builder benefits depends on setting up a qualifying direct deposit, which takes as long as your payroll cycle allows.

Note: specific offers, rates, and eligibility requirements can change. Always confirm current terms on Chime's site before applying.

Stuck on step 4 (direct deposit)?

This is the step that trips people up most. If payroll won't take your routing number or you're not sure where to find it, we'll help you sort it out.
